“Library as Platform: Unlocking the Potential of Our Communities” SCRLC Leadership Luncheon Webinar.
Abstract: Our buildings matter. Our services matter. But they don’t matter on their own, and we do not determine their value – that is a job for the community. It is only in the advancement of those we serve that we find our impact. It is only in the potential realized that we can measure our contribution. Our buildings, our books, our services, our catalogs must not be channels of assistance we provide, but part of a powerful platform that enables our communities to succeed. This platform is our infrastructure, but it is also the infrastructure of the community – co-owned.

Every time I hear from him, I get a new perspective on what it means to be a librarian. The lecture yesterday was part of a the Leadership Luncheon series sponsored by Syracuse’s iSchool and it was a look at the library as platform as opposed to “book museum”. Even for someone fairly new to thinking about library’s, the whole concept takes some getting used to – a perspective shift. If the library is the infrastructure, our role as librarians is freed up from worrying about buying books, protecting resources to creating connections from one place to another, helping the community find its way. Cool, huh? Here’s the whole lecture. [...]

Hi prof. Lankes. Really appreciate your ideas and the exemplary way you distribute your content via podcasts, screencast, etc.. for those who can’t make it to one of your lectures. Note: the mp3 of THIS talk abrubtly breaks off in the middle of a sentence. All best, Saskia
I’ll take a look. Thanks.
MP3 file should be fixed with the whole presentation. Sorry.
